More than Soccer...

Region 88 is not just about soccer. It is a community of people. And when we have an opportunity to help others, usually some of our volunteers have stepped up and try to make a difference. It is especially wonderful to see the charity of our young players.

We have had fundraisers for schools, collected soccer balls for kids in other countries living in poverty, donated soccer uniforms to other soccer organziations which cannot afford them, raised money for the victims of the California fires and Hurricane Katrina, walked and raised money to combat cancer, collected cell phones for senior citizens, and clothes, toys, and food for the homeless.

We commend the volunteers and the community of Region 88 for their compassion and their generosity.

Below are some of the past and upcoming programs we are working on. Feel free to take part.

Uniform Give-Aways

To help the program with their costs, Region 88 provided Glendale High School Girls soccer team with home and also away uniforms as part of the annual contributions to schools that let us use their facilities.

Score-A-Thon for Hurricane Katrina and California Wildfires

In 2003 and 2005, Region 88 raised money by scoring goals! The families of our region worked together to raise $6,386 to send to the relief fund for Hurrican Katrina in 2005, over $3000 to the relief fund for the California fire victims in 2003, and food, clothing and toy donations for the California fire victims in 2007.

Soccer Equipment for children in Mexico and South Africa

Hazen Burford, one of our best Region 88 volunteers, in partnership with Premier Soccer, took a shipment of several sets of uniforms and assorted soccer equipment to a township in South Africa. The Soccer gear, donated by Region 88 and Premier Soccer of Montrose, included several uniform sets, soccer balls, gear bags and cleats were shipped to South Africa in April 2005. (Read full story)

Region 88 has also given many sets of uniforms to some leagues in Mexico.

Cell Phones for Seniors

Region 88 collected over 100 used cell phones to trade in for new minutes for senior citizens.

Relay for LIfe Cancer Walk

Since 2006, Region 88 has teamed up with the city of Glendale and the American Cancer Society to host a Relay for Life event at the Glendale Sports Complex. This fun event has raised thousands each year to fight cancer. Stay tuned for next year's event.
