Game Line-Up Cards
Instructions and Sportsmanship Ratings

This is to help the coaches/referees have a standard to go by when filling out the game cards. If you have any questions, contact the Sportsmanship Coordinator, Larry Veeh, at sportsmanship@ayso88.org.

For the Coach
Please make sure that your game card lists the players by uniform number. Fill in all the information on the front of the card. All of it is important.

For the Referee and Assistant Referees
Make sure that the coach fills out all the information on the front of the card. Since you will have had the previous game, you should be able to fill in the information yourself. (note: The coach's failure to complete the information or not listing his team in alpha order is one way of differing between "normal" or "fair" behavior.)

For the Referee Team
Print your names on the back of the card; at the end of the game and the sportsmanship ceremony, initial your name. Center referee can sign the card instead of initialing after the short evaluation of the game and the teams.

The Rating System
This is a "5 point" rating system, with 3 as the median value. Of course, since "Zero" is an option,  a sixth marking is also present, but the causes of  "zero" marks are pretty clear-cut.  If, at the end of the game and during the sportsmanship ceremony, nothing out of the ordinary has happened, then the Referee team should mark a default to 3 points in each category, totaling 15 points. Defaulting to 25 points is not going to help anyone win the sportsmanship award, since there is no way to tell superb from poor behavior.  Any cards received with 5 points awarded in every category should have Referee comments to justify the rating. If no comments are made, this "Lazy 25" will automatically default to 15 when the data is entered.

5--Excellent

4--Very good

3--Represents an average game

2--Fair

1--Poor

Extra game cards and mailing envelopes are available at 1430 East Mountain Street in a box at the front entrance.

Examples for each rating:

 5--Excellent

a) Coaches show genuine respect and congratulate each other sincerely at the end

b) In the face of adverse luck and circumstances, the team still genuinely congratulates the winners for a game well played

c) The team thanks the referees for a job well done if the calls have been adverse or even erroneous (here, the refs themselves would know the context).

d) Parents cheer their team in the adverse situation as if it had been positive

e) The winning team is gracious and sincere in its victory.

 4--Very good

a) Coach does not disagree with calls

b) Parents cheer with intensity for a losing team

c) Parents or spectators go out of their way to thank the referees

d) Coaches lend equipment (pinnies, game balls, and shin guards, goalie glove) to opponents if they are unfortunate and have forgotten it.

e) Teams line up at midfield for inspection and coin toss without any problems, without any unacceptable equipment problems, and don't have to be reminded to adjust their uniform.

f) Teams give their close attention to the referee's instructions and the coin toss ceremony.

 3--Average

a) The teams come to the centerline when beckoned, properly attired, occasional reminders by the coaches for his team to pay attention or to look presentable.

b) Play is without yellow or red cards,

c) No poor spectator, coach, or team behavior,

d) Sportsmanship ceremony at end of the game is without incident, coaches shake hands with each other and thank the referee team for their help.

e) Spectators and parents cheer their team, no rancor.

f) Coaches and parents on the whole provide positive comments.

g) Equipment is set up properly and promptly if the team is responsible, to make sure the games begin on time.

2--Fair

a) One or even two lapses in accepting the decisions of the referees, especially if the calls are close; more than two becomes continuous and is the basis for a poor rating of 1.

b) Teams talking or not paying attention while the referee is conducting the opening ceremonies

c) More than one or two players needing to be reminded to tuck in their jerseys or pull up socks

d) Occasional adverse comments by parents

e) Occasional negative comments by the coach or assistant coaches.

f) Failure of the coach to make sure the parents sit back from the touchline

g) Coaches or parents entering the pitch before being given permission by the referee.

h) Frequent failure of substitutes to line up at the midfield so that the AR can take their numbers.

i) Failure of coach to have two or more players play at least half the game (quick check of card by AR before presenting card to Referee).

1--Poor
(Note that any one of these if they continue, would be seen as poor sportsmanship and would call for a caution or even a yellow card)

a) Complaining, or criticism of teammates by players.

b) Taunting or "in your face" gestures after a goal (if they continue, obviously warnings or yellow cards are given.)

c) Running up the score without making an attempt to keep the better players back.

d) "Attitude" in the sportsmanship ceremony

e) Forgetting to come to the center line for the post-game ceremony (that is, the referee might need to remind the coach of what is proper)

f) Coaches or parents make critical comments or question the decisions

g) Coaches or assistant coaches fail to remain in the technical area after being reminded by the Referee or the AR

h) Spectators/parents fail to keep the touchlines clear even after being reminded by the AR

i) Parents, coaches, or spectators continually try to influence the decisions of the AR or referee

j) Players frequently ignore the referee's whistle or throw-in directions

k) Players must be told to remove all jewelry or objects they should not be wearing.

l) Players or coaches attempt to persuade the referee to allow them to ignore safety requirements.

m) Parents coach from behind the goal line

n) The team parents fail to provide half time or end of game liquids or snacks.

o) Coach or parent entering the pitch to protest a call

0--Unacceptable

a) Unacceptable behavior in all categories is given when a team receives two yellow cards or a red card.

b) Abandoning a game or not showing up for the game results in 0 points in all categories.

c) Yellow card to one player justifies giving "0" in the "Conduct of Players" line

d) Refusal of one or more players to shake hands with opponents after the game

e) Snide or insulting comments to opponents

f) Arguing or yelling at opponent's coach or parents (ARs can make the judgement here), or arguing with own coach or parents.

g) Failure of coach or team to shake referees' hands

h) Negative comments by a coach to his team, to individual players, or to opponents

i) Continuing negative comments to the referees by the coach or spectators
