SECTION 1 GAME SUMMARIES

Region 88 Glendale Allstars under 14 boys team won the Section One Allstars playoffs on March 8 – 9, 2008 at Riverside, California.

A total of 3 games were played on Saturday. With an early morning start, especially for those team players who had to travel from Glendale which may have led to the slow start for the team, the game against La Quinta ended with a 2 - 2 tie with the last goal being scored against Glendale a minute before the game ended.

However, the mood picked up quickly during the 2nd game against Hacienda Heights when Glendale scored within minutes after kickoff and again before the end of the 1st quarter. A strong and tireless offense, which included Pavle, Uriel, and Joshua bombarded the goal with the help of a blazing midfield made up by Allen, Andrew, Michael Sh., Angel and Daniel, while the defense, Michael D., Raphael, Oswin, Alex, Chris, and goalie Gabe, held tight causing an effortless shutout and ending the game at 4 - 0.

The team rested up and came back to the field for the 3rd game later that afternoon, very pleased to find that our standing in the competition was one point ahead of La Quinta. Scoring in the first quarter against Bullhead, Glendale relentlessly played the final game of the day ending with a sizable lead of 4 - 1.

This brought Glendale back the following day, advancing to the semi finals. Semi finals included teams from Palm Springs, Manhattan Beach, and Covina. Glendale won against Palm Springs, 3–1, advancing them to the fight for first place against Manhattan Beach.

Unexpected winds gusting up to 50 miles an hour only added to the obstacles both teams needed to overcome. With a well-thought out lineup prepared by Coach Angel, the team entered the field ready to get the job done. Glendale, scoring twice in the first quarter, lost a goal to a penalty kick in the second quarter, but insisted on leaving the field at halftime with a nice 3-1 lead.

Manhattan Beach desperately tried to regain composure by scoring once more on a breakaway in the fourth quarter, but the attempt proved unsuccessful due to the relentless persistence of Glendale, leading Glendale to a 3-2 victory and dubbing them the Section One Allstar Champions.

Glendale Region 88 could not be happier, especially since this is the first Glendale team to win this championship since 1990. This team now moves on to the state championship tournament which will be played against three other Section Allstar Champion teams. This is quite an honor!

Glendale Allstars, we congratulate you on your demonstration of what it is to be a fine championship team and wish you the best of luck in the state tournament!
